14.12.11 - DAY 348 - Rate Race

Today's track was constructed in Botanic Media's rather tasty, fully functional production studio. I work there (freelance), so please get in touch with Botanic Media if you'd like to take advantage of the very useful space or my own audio skills.

This track was a little bit rushed as I had a gig this evening with the "QUBe", in the auspicious Ulster Museum. Tonight, QUBe consisted of 20 musicians, interpreting and performing Mark Appelbaum's "The Metaphysics of Notation". Much lovely reverberant noise was made in the vicinity of a vast, angular, modernised communal space.

This was fairly spontaneous. I liked the drum kit I was using and everything else worked off that groove. About halfway through I got thinking about the song, "Get Innocuous" by LCD Soundsystem, so that might explain how I approached the vocals. Overall I'm pretty chuffed with this, I was planning on doing something more complex, but the vibe of this just swayed me.

Eeep. Just missing the midnight deadline tonight, on account of being super psyched at having had a decent plug for the SADFAY project, by Rigsy on the BBC Radio Ulster ATL show. Apologies for my slight lateness with SADFAY 157. TSK TSK. I didn't rest on my laurels though: Tonight's track is some smooth, laidback house stuff. I think this is the kind of track to lie down and get baked to. Alternatively you could dance about and point your head to the sky, reflecting on all the lovely things that make you a person who should feel great about the things you've done that permit you to feel so good about yourself.

Another collaboration with the veritable Mr Niall Kelly today. We aimed to find a sound not to far removed from the old Detroit techno, soulful stylings of a bygone era. Awash with summer vibes, the track is a slow builder that doesn't aim to tax the brain too much. The song contains a sample from the somewhat mislaid philosophy of a clearly deranged woman who believes that rainbows did not occur twenty years ago and are a very new phenomenon. Ironic perhaps? Or is she just stupid?

It's been too long since I wrote something this satisfying. I've been enjoying writing the SADFAY songs recently, because they've been full of good ideas, sincere enthusiasm, passion and hard work. Tonight's track takes that one step further. This is something I am immensely proud of: A phat-mutha-trucka of a track, which one might gladly shake ones booty to, we hope.

PS. It's got ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with Eurovision, other than it's music and people should get rather excited about it...

Ending March with a bit of a party track!

First of all I wanted to include a recording of the wind outside my studio today. Was it not fierce! And then... On with the proper song: It's a reaction to a song I heard today that made me slightly angry: How many songs tell us to get on the dance floor, make some noise, throw our hands in the air? Does it never get boring for people? This is 2011 and rappers and producers are still writing songs about dancing and getting down tonight. I just wish people had more original ideas for expressing these notions sometimes. Tonight's gonna be a good, good night... I mean, really? *ROLLS EYES!* Anyway, aside from that, the tune I heard today was pretty damn PHAT and so I thought I'd try and make something similar, but with my own slightly sarcastic (and yet polite) take on those cliched "lyrics", or "instructions".

08.01.11 - The Thing About Attraction

Around 04:00 this morning I started writing. I'm not sure what it was supposed to be, possibly an essay on a subject in an attempt to clarify some things with myself or the world. But it ended up coming out half like a poem, half like a rant. I decided to use it in today's song.

I've deliberately applied loads of effects on the voice to distort it and make the words of this "poem/rant" thing barely audible, with the desire being that people will only be able to pick out the odd word, or the odd sentence here and there. Hopefully this will work alongside the music, creating tension and attention in the right places.

We'll see...

Today's track is in the realms of house music. It has a little nod to the kitsch and the retro and some nice little synth pads and edits that I am quite pleased with. I'd love to hear this over a big sound system.

Anyway, have fun with it you crazy kids!
