20.12.11 - DAY 354 - Hydrogen Super Excluder (ft. Korny Devenney & Michael Sampson)

Listen (and/or buy) now on Bandcamp

An experimental number, full of pop promise, hallucinogenic drugs and death. Short enough to fit on a 45. In the sonic universe with me tonight, were Korny Devenney (http://www.facebook.com/AnthonyKornyDevenney) and Michael Sampson (http://www.facebook.com/pages/MatscaN-Music/350947393632).

07.12.11 - DAY 341 - My Beast

Listen (and/or buy) now on Bandcamp

A bit of a beastly one this. I started out playing some nice guitar chords. I was happy to call that take a finished song. That was about 9:30pm. I decided to explore some other sounds and grooves, just for fun. Things then got a lot deeper.

Enjoy

01.12.11 - DAY 335 - Tis The Season (ft. Adam Scott)

Listen (and/or buy) now on Bandcamp

Tonight's track is a collaboration with Adam Scott. Adam wanted to create something Christmas-y for the season. Ummm.... Yea.

A bit about Adam:
My name is Adam. I'm a musician. I'm currently a gigging singer - songwriter so come and watch a gig. I'm also in my 3rd year at Queens studying music focusing on composition and contemporary performance. Have a wee look at my blog to find out more and keep up to date with my life . . .

Peace.

22.11.11 - DAY 326 - Near Silence of Nature

Listen (and/or buy) now on Bandcamp

I had a nice walk in a park today, wrote down some lyrics. Came home, planning to make some sort of simple, 'heartfelt' track. It sounded awful and I couldn't bare it. So I changed the words a bit and made something else. It feels equally as over-the-top, but in a different, kinda abstract way.

29.06.11 - DAY 180 - I'm Tired

Listen (and/or buy) now on Bandcamp

Started to play around with Max/MSP tonight, I was able to route some randomising stuff into Ableton, but that's about as far as I delved into custom made patches. Also, my brain is on about 20% capacity tonight, so this clash of screaming synths and jarring rhythmic mess will have to do y'all!

Listen (and/or buy) now on Bandcamp

Tonight's track is a live jam with Rory Brady. Testing out an early prototype of his new Max 5 performance system, we set up two computers and recorded ourselves jamming through the system's various parameters.

22.06.11 - DAY 173 - Reicher Seven of Four

Listen (and/or buy) now on Bandcamp

This song is in 7/4 and maybe a bit 'Steve Reich-esque', hence the cheesy (Star Trek referencing) pun title. I used Marimba, Kalimba and Vibraphone patches and a couple of nice fizzy synth patches. The rest was arpeggios and automation.

14.06.11 - DAY 165 - Bonnie Wee Noise

Listen (and/or buy) now on Bandcamp

Caroline Pugh very kindly let me use recordings of her voice for this SADFAY, which basically mangles the recordings in as many ways I could think of, with a fairly limited amount of time. Caroline and I will be collaborating on a SADFAY track, properly, later in the week!

08.06.11 - DAY 159 - Lynch Mob

Listen (and/or buy) now on Bandcamp

Tonight I felt like taking my time. I decided to just play piano for a couple of hours and enjoy that. The song writing came along at a slow pace. And that was just fine. It was very therapeutic. I think / hope I'm getting better at adding subtlety to my songs, as I feel the vocals and beats just sit right, not too overpowering or taking away from any other element.

05.06.11 - DAY 156 - Tasty Tasty Brain Juice

Listen (and/or buy) now on Bandcamp

I am bloated and tired after a big load of yummy chinese food earlier. This is something of a representation of that, but it was also a chance for me to use the funky little string-percussion-thing-a-me I bought today too. Also added about 20 layers of voice, because I felt like it.

Today is a collaborative track between myself and Chris Allen. After coming up with a couple of generic ideas, several cups of coffee later, GENIUS STRUCK!! The dialogue you will hear is from a selection of vintage sci-fi and horror scripts.

27.05.11 - DAY 147 - Négliger

Listen (and/or buy) now on Bandcamp

This is a bit of a sound experiment, attempting to explore similar territory to Autechre's later work: Glitchy, contorted rhythms often verging on the brink of collapse. Obviously Autechre spend more than 3 or 4 hours on their pieces, so I'm not sure I've hit the mark here. If anything it's like a piss-take out of Autechre, rather than a homage, which wasn't intentional. But often intention isn't what matters. So yea, this is a bit of a silly track really.

23.05.11 - DAY 143 - Slippy Sock Swing

Listen (and/or buy) now on Bandcamp

So this is all about playing with piano and filter delays. The piano parts were deliberately over-quantised for those tight 'stabs'. The layers of effects create a mild 'dreamy' quality, with a light electronic 'quirkiness' underneath. The rhythmic section comes from layering up different processed loops, similar to yesterday's track, I find this a nice way of working: Let's me create, somewhat 'abstract' grooves, which have a nice evolving / rolling quality.

22.05.11 - DAY 142 - Faded Patterns On The Rose Curtains

Listen (and/or buy) now on Bandcamp

Today has mostly been spent reciting and singing the praises of James Blake songs. I got home about 20:40, after a lovely day of tasty frappe's, pints of Guinness, yummy blue cheese and bacon baguettes and a few glasses of red wine! I sat down to my keyboard and almost accidentally hit the first chord of 'Unluck' from James Blake's album. It was a sign! Today's SADFAY was going to be inspired by, and pay homage to, the amazing crooner from London! Then I whipped out the keyboard riff that runs through this song. Again, it just kinda poured out and instantly I thought, "Yes. That's what I want!" Some random lyrics also seemed to spew out of my head, along with a fairly nice triplet-feel beat. One of the fastest SADFAY sessions I've done and yet I don't feel it sounds rushed or half hearted.

21.05.11 - DAY 141 - Loose Change

Listen (and/or buy) now on Bandcamp

I attempted to make something kinda minimal and vocal driven, with a strong mood of melancholy (again). I was quite pleased with the rhythmic backing, so I let that ride out a bit. It was 3 tracks of live percussion: slapping loose change in my jeans, tapping and shaking a near-empty box of matches and tapping a small metal box (I now use to keep my tabacco in). I then resampled a chunk from those tracks and applied some processing (flanger, reversing, saturation etc.), so it ended up having a nice crackling, but sorta 'swooshy' sound. For the last section I stuck a rather large digital kick, with plenty of click-y top end, then controlled it's timing with an arpeggiator.

Enjoy

Cheers ^_^
