Having a bit of a muck about with Auto-Tune and Vocoder stuff. This is a wee short one. Rachel Austin gave me the idea to make this: An Auto-Tuned version of Lars Von Trier's recent "Nazi" gaffe at the Canne Film Festival. Personally, I think the guy is just having a bit of fun and it seems the audience gets that too, but still, his mumbling and rambling does become quite amusing too.

29.03.11 - DAY 88 - Space Girl Love Beat

Today's track is a free download! I didn't quite get as much done to this track as I would have liked, but I'm fairly happy with the results. I went for something of a hip hop vibe, with lots of sampling of random orchestral music. This was heavily inspired by a Wagon Christ song called 'Toomorrow' (from the album of the same name). It's fairly straight forward in that I haven't processed the individual sounds much: There are drums and percussion, a bassline that stays fairly straight throughout and the samples on top. Mild editing, pitch shifting and stretching of the samples in Ableton... And that's it.

More f-f-f-PHat grooves tonight. Enjoyed making this and was pretty gob smacked when the two random samples I grabbed actually fit into the track with nearly no editing: one just needed to be pitched down by 1 semi-tone. The other was almost the same tempo and pitch! I love when little flukes like that happen.

04.02.11 - Mugen Critique

Another collaboration today, this time with Conor Agnew. Conor is a musician who is currently studying classical composition at QUB and popular music. He writes in a wide array of stuff and has played in a variety of bands from noise to technical death metal, (but likes electronic music on the side aswell). This was a great collaboration! Conor and I pulled out all the riffs and samples so quickly. The session just flowed. Conor played all the guitar, piano and bass parts, with myself laying down the beat and synths, we both worked together on the arrangement, with myself processing things, editing, mixing and finally singing over the piece.

The lyrics came from a random "critique generator" online.

01.02.11 - Loop De Doo

Tonight I've played around a bit with "beat box" style stuff. I may have a big beard and Mr. Beardyman himself may have once actually pointed at me out of a crowd and said "Look, it's the real Beardyman!" (true story), but I clearly have a lot to learn. On the other hand, I am pretty nifty with a loop pedal / Kaoss Pad and I find it easy to lay down a load of freestyle singing, harmonies and rhythmic patterns, so perhaps this stuff has it's own merits. I was a little rushed tonight, didn't start this track until 9pm, but pleased with the final results, if for no other reason than it's fun to be trying new things with this project (once again).

Tonight's tune completes January on an upbeat mood. Thanks to my bro James, for letting me use some samples of his voice in this. I had a bit of a dip through random bits and pieces in my sample collection to find things could work with the vibe of this song.

So that's January done and dusted. 31 songs under my belt in 31 days, many of which I am immensely proud of. Not too shabby.

After some very productive work on the theme tune for Haven (the Irish animated series I am working on with Crucible Pictures), the writer / director / poet / visonary-extraordinaire Paul Hamilton decided to collaborate with me on tonight's SADFAY. Free-styling some singing and spoken word over a very basic guide beat, he left me to have my way with his takes and add whatever other beats, bass, sample edits and synths I felt would do it all justice. Behold! The 25th song for the S.A.D.F.A.Y. Project!

05.01.11 - Tightness Injection

Just made it! 23:25 by my watch, which means I've 35 more minutes. This is definitely the closest I've come to missing the midnight deadline! Anyway. Made it! The track is done. It's a shorter one (because of time constraints) and because, well, tracks like this don't need to be long. I reckon, if I'd a few more hours I could tidy up some of the rough edges and move things around a bit, maybe draw it out for another 30 seconds or so.

So maybe some day I'll come back to this track and rework it, but for now the track is officially my 5th completed song for the SADFAY project!
